Back to Sicily…

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Many of us know the “Valley of Temples” in Agrigento, one of the most amazing archaeological sites in the world. There is however another very interesting archaeological site: Selinunte (the name comes from a sweet-smelling herb called Selinon ). Selinunte was a Greek city situated on the south coast of Sicily. The city was founded in the seventh century BC. The archaeological site is divided into three main areas: the first contains the three biggest and most important temples (one having been re-erected in 1957) the second area is the actual city “Acropolis”, continuing to the third area west of the acropolis and beyond the River Modione, you’ll find the sanctuaries, and of course more temples.
We took some pictures during our visit there…

This is the biggest archaeological site in Europe so we don’t suggest you to visit it on foot…The best way to visit the site, is to take the guided tour, electrical mini trains circulates the archaeological area non stop, and you can hop on/off anywhere you like to. The site is open from 9.30 and close an hour before sunset the entrance fee is 5 Euros. The guided tours cost between 5 and 10 euros depending on the tour you want to do.

One last detail…after a few hours walking in the heat, breathing history and culture, surrounded by ancient ruins, admiring the beauty of the place…a couple of beers at the beach made my day complete ;)

25th of April is a public holiday in Italy…why?

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Next week-end is very difficult to find accommodation in Italy…why? It is Italy’s national holiday. On the 25th fo April 1945 Italy was set free from the nazi-fascist regime.

The weather has not been great in the last few weeks, so people really need to enjoy the first sun after a long winter. Cities like Venice, Florence and Rome are the most visited as usual. But more and more people choose the countryside of Tuscany, Umbria and Abruzzo to spend a few days in farm house, small B&B’s and relax a little bit. So… slow down …enjoy life!

Alfabookings in Sicily !

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Every time we open a new destination on Alfabookings web site we organize a trip there. We like to spend time talking to people, looking for nice places and eating typical food. Our last trip was in Sicily. In the next days we will publish videos, photos and the little story of our trip.
One thing is really amazing in Sicily: The Volcano. Etna is the highest active vulcano in Europe, 3,326 m (10,910 ft) high. The landscape is beautiful and suggestive…

A little curiosity about St. Peter’s Square….
This is the main square of Vatican City, it is made up of 284 columns 60-feet tall on 4 rows.
From this point ( see the image below ) the colonnades seem to consist of only a single row of columns…

Once in Rome, find this point, take a picture of the “single row of columns” and send it to us, we will publish the nicest photo and send the winner a discount coupon for your next trip to Italy!!
