About Sicily Island
Sicily has 5 million inhabitants and capital city is Palermo. It is directly adjacent to Italy in the east and only a step away from Africa in the west. Throughout the history many people have tried to make this treasure their own, and as a tourist you will see the traces of Greek, Arab and Byzantine culture. The island is also the home of Europe's biggest volcano. Etna rises 3,320 meters above the sea and leaves its mark on the whole eastern part of the islands landscape.
Sicily: photo of Palermo, San Vito lo Capo, Taormina, Syracuse and moreSicily stretches out in the sunlight in the very middle of the Mediterranean Sea, bursting with beautiful beaches, interesting history, delicious cuisine, mountains to climb, and smaller islands to visit. It would probably be easier to mention the things this island don't have to the things of which it possesses. As Goethe once said, "To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is to not have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything". Well, this is the Sicily where you can still be served the fish that they are just bringing in fresh from the sea, or walk through the Acropolis of Selinunte just like the greeks did 2600 years before you, or maybe just sit down in the shade savouring those genuine Sicilian sweets, enjoying the fact that the heat of the sun forces you to slow down. Obviously Sicily is also where you come because you like to have your morning swim in a crystal clear water! Sicily also have many of those famous seaside resorts, like the village of Taormina, much celebrated for its beauty. Here you get to share the hotel lobby with the national jet set in vacation. In the same province, Catania, lies the vulcano Etna, and apart from just the feeling of being on another planet, the enourmous natural park offers an endless amount of adventures, such as skiing, trekking and even rafting. Not to forget if you like beautiful sea and beaches, are the small paradises of the surrounding archipelagos, such as Aeolian, Pantelleria and Aegadian Islands. And at last but not least, Sicily is worth a visit only for the hospitality and warmth of it's inhabitants.
