Acireale lies in the east of Sicily, facing the Ionian sea, just at the foot of the volcano Etna. It was founded on a 150 meters high plateau made of lava, nowadays a natural reserve called “La Timpa”. The town is considered a jewel of the Sicilian baroque. The entire region of Catania and Acireale is coloured by the presence of the impressive volcano, and the whole coastline is characterized by sea cliffs of lava. Piazza del Duomo is the heart of the rather small town centre, and here you will also find the most important baroque buildings, such as the Basilica di S. Sebastiano and the Basilica of San. Pietro e Paolo. The town is located just outside Catania, more precisely 15km north, this makes it also a perfect choice for visiting the fascinating city of lava. However Acireale and the surrounding areas does not lack of things to experience. From here you easily visit Etna for a daytrip, or maybe you’ll be satisfied with a room overlooking the mountain! Another nearby point of interest is Taormina, a small and beautiful town 40 km further up the coast, famous for its beaches and its stunning beauty. Considering the rich amount of sulphurous water in the area, why not do as the antique roman’s and enjoy Acireales thermal baths.
